When I first started working with one of our client’s redesign teams I was a bit nervous to face them, let alone coach the team.
However, I was confident in the thought that I was equipped with the things I learned at Boot Camp. I was also given some Tatham team deployment materials to read, background information on what step the team was on and some coaching on what to expect. This provided me with all the knowledge I needed to help me think ahead and plan for the next steps with the team.
This process of planning ahead with all the right information at hand is a great value-add to my skills and I have extended its use beyond work. Getting my materials ahead of time helps me to understand the concept, carry out the thinking process and then analyze. This thinking process takes into account the different ways and disciplines of learning and explores the relationships between the knowledge and the thinking process.
Whenever I get confused with all the information in front of me, I ask my mentor for clarifications and she answers by asking me questions that force me to think through to the root level of the situation and help me search for the answers on my own.
And more importantly, I have learned to always go back to my experiences at Boot Camp, which helps me clarify questions in my mind. This reinforces the need to rely on data, apply the thinking process, challenge the various alternatives and be ready with a position that I can then bring back to the table for discussion.
There is so much power in combining the discipline of a methodology with that of a thinking process founded on old, reliable sets of data. That alone builds so much confidence in me.
